Damar Batu is a natural resin often misunderstood in the international market. “Batu” is the Indonesian word for Stone, which perfectly describes this product: it is a fossilized, hardened resin found in the ground, unlike fresh “Gum Damar” tapped from trees.
Origins and Harvest Damar Batu is excavated from the earth in the forests of Sumatra and Kalimantan. It is the fossilized remains of ancient Dipterocarp forests. Because it comes from the ground, it naturally requires cleaning to remove soil and moss.
Key Characteristics
- Hardness: Much harder and more brittle than soft gums.
- Melting Point: Higher melting point, making it excellent for heat-resistant applications.
- Cost: Generally more affordable than hand-tapped Gum Damar.
Common Uses It is a versatile industrial workhorse used in:
- Manufacturing dark varnishes and lacquers.
- Production of incense (due to its earthy aroma).
- Waterproofing boat hulls (traditional putty).
